Tragic Loss of 12-Year-Old Underscores Importance of Allergen Safety

We share our heartfelt condolences with the family of 12-year-old Mia Shay St Hilaire, who tragically lost her life after consuming a milkshake that was believed to contain traces of hazelnuts and almonds. Mia, who had a severe tree nut allergy, was rushed to the hospital after the incident in August 2023 but, heartbreakingly, lost her life.

This devastating event serves as a painful reminder of the critical importance of allergen awareness and strict food safety practices.

An investigation revealed that the milkshake had been contaminated with traces of hazelnuts and almonds, from a previous milkshake made in the same machine, underscoring the need for rigorous cleaning processes and proper management of allergens in food preparation areas. Following the incident, legal action was taken against the operator responsible, resulting in an £18,000 fine and 100 hours of community service.

Mia’s parents, Adrian and Chanel, expressed their profound grief: "We think of Mia every day and knowing her death could potentially have been prevented so simply, only adds to how heartbroken we are as a family. We hope this conviction and fine sends a loud message to businesses serving food and drinks across the country, of the devastating consequences of failing to take food safety seriously."

It is deeply saddening to see another young person lose their life due to an allergy-related incident that might have been preventable.

Every individual with allergies deserves to feel confident that the food and drinks they consume are prepared with the utmost care to prevent contamination.

Our thoughts remain with Mia’s family and all those affected by this tragic loss.
